7 Tidbits Regarding the 2018 Thunder Over Louisville

As always, the opening act for this year’s Kentucky Derby Festivities is “Thunder Over Louisville”, an extreme fireworks extravaganza.  Pair it with the afternoon air show and you’ve got one entertaining day.  Here are seven tidbits that can make your day more enjoyable:

  1. First and foremost:  Wear comfortable shoes!  You will be on your feet for literally hours and having foot pain is no fun.
  2. Park far away!  The further you park away from the action the sooner you can get away when it’s all said and done.
  3. Word of caution:  It gets pretty loud and may disturb small children or those sensitive to loud noises.
  4. Pets, tents and alcohol are strictly prohibited.
  5. The fireworks will be set to great music featuring the “Disco Theme Era”.  You might hear music from Donna Summer “Love to Love You, Baby”, the Bee Gees “You Should be Dancing”, and Rick James “Super Freak”.  You could also hear the likes of Abba’s “Dancing Queen”, Earth Wind & Fire’s “Let’s Groove” and Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop til You  Get Enough”.  If you’re lucky, you might even hear Van McCoy’s “The Hustle”, The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive”.  The list literally goes on and on.
  6. Your admission is a Pegasus Pin and will only set you back $6 if purchased in advance and a mere dollar more if purchased at the gate.  All of Waterfront Park is open and free to the public for viewing – obviously on a first come, first serve basis.  On the Indiana side, if you haven’t been to Jeffersonville lately, you will be amazed by the changes and notably more viewing areas near Pearl Street on Riverside Drive.
  7. Parking can get a little tricky though.  In Downtown Louisville, there will be ample public parking and off-street spaces within a 10 block walk to the river.  Best advice?  Plan ahead and you might even consider contacting PARC at 587-PARK for additional information.  Handicapped parking is in all area PARC garages in Louisville & Riverside Parking Garages in Jeffersonville, near the Kennedy Bridge.  There’s also parking near the Falls of the Ohio in Clarksville.

Don’t miss the 28th consecutive year as “Thunder Over Louisville – A Disco Thunder” opens up the 2018 Kentucky Derby Ceremonies on Saturday, April 21st.  The Air Show, consisting of extraordinary military aircraft, precedes Thunder events and begins at 3 pm.  So … make a day of it and enjoy the air show and the amazing fireworks display.  There’s not a better way to kick off the Kentucky Derby festivities than this full day of fun!
