A Fireworks Extravaganza

The highly anticipated “Thunder Over Louisville 2019” is near at hand.  The official date for the largest annual fireworks show in the country is Saturday, April 13th.  The show has been moved up a week as to not conflict with Easter.

The annual kick-off event of the Kentucky Derby Festival, as always, is free to the public with the purchase of a 2019 Pegasus pin.  This year’s theme is “The Wonderful World of Thunder” featuring songs from favorite fairy tales and animated movies.  Waterfront Park opens at 9:00 am but as the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm.  Folks are known to get there as early as 6:00 am to get a preferred spot.

Here are some worthwhile tips to consider when attending the event.  First of all, park as far away as possible!  After it’s all said and done, you’ll have a much easier exit and you’ll be glad you did.  By the way, it probably goes without saying, but wear comfortable shoes!  Some important items to have on hand would be sunscreen, blankets, toilet paper and hand sanitizer.  You can bring food and drink to the venue (except the Chow Wagon area) but alcohol is not allowed and all bags are subject to search.

Don’t forget one of the nation’s top-rated air show precedes the fireworks.  This event begins at 3:00 pm along the Ohio River and has, in years past, featured air craft from the Air Force, the Army Golden Knights and the Royal Canadian Air Force, to name a few.

The Air Show and “Thunder Over Louisville” look to be another incredible opening for the Kentucky Derby Festival.  If you love dazzling air shows and phenomenal fireworks, you need to make plans to attend this year’s pre-Derby festivities.  Enjoy the show!
